What is fellowship training?

Fellowship training refers to special extra training that a surgeon has undergone to deal with a more specific subspecialty in orthopedic surgery.

All orthopedic surgeons learn to do some knee surgery during their five years of residency training.  However, a few surgeons choose to spend an extra year of specialty training working with surgeons who concentrate on the knee.

Ask your doctor if he or she has an extra year of fellowship training in knee surgery.
