Swelling
If associated with a twisting injury, the knee will often swell over a 24-48 hour time period after the injury. With a "wear and tear" injury, a chronic tear may lead to some persistant swelling in the knee as well. Sometimes the knee does not swell.
Pain
The knee usually hurts and is tender on one side or the other (whichever side the tear is on usually).
Stiffness
The knee may feel stiff, especially after increased activities
Locking
With a large tear, the torn piece of meniscus can get stuck between the bones resulting in the knee becoming "locked."
Popping, Catching
Sometimes the piece of meniscus can shift in and out of from between the bones resulting in popping and catching sensations.
Other
Meniscus tears can lead to a large variety of other symptoms depending upon the individual situation.
