Well vascularized tears (click here for WebMD link with additional info) of the meniscus in young patients are often treated with repair when possible.  The repair is usually done through the arthroscope and numerous different techniques of repair are available.  Click on the link below under arthroscopy for more information on arthroscopy.

Many painful, meniscus tears are treated with arthroscopic (see link below for more information on arthroscopy) debridement of the torn piece of meniscus.  This is usually because most tears occur in a portion of the meniscus that does not have good blood supply.  Therefore, if the tear were to be repaired, it probably would not heal.  The decision is made during surgery whether to save or remove the torn piece of meniscus based upon the appearance of the torn tissue.

Some doctors may treat chronic tears without surgery, especially in older patients with arthritis.
